Events, History, Heritage and Archaeology
20 January 2017
Each themed year focuses on highlighting Scotland’s most attractive features and hospitality to visitors from near and far and 2017 is the Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology.
Since 2009 Visit Scotland has themed each calendar year with a focus on highlighting Scotland’s most attractive features and unique hospitality to visitors from near and far. We’ve celebrated Food & Drink, Innovation, Architecture & Design and had some memorable Homecomings too and Historic Scotland has participated whole-heartedly but this year, in particular, is rather special for us.
2017 is Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology which celebrates the richness of Scotland’s intriguing history, impressive cultural heritage and fascinating archaeology. So we will be going all-out to showcase what we are most passionate about and proud of and inviting everyone to join us for the ride.
Our extended events programme will kick off in style in April at Stirling Castle with The Great Big History Weekend where visitors will be immersed in an historical adventure featuring virtual tours and traditional skills. Dumbarton Castle will be rocking The Rock of Ages with a multi-period extravaganza in June and the thunder of hoofs and clash of lances will echo across Linlithgow Peel with the return of the ever-popular Spectacular Jousting in July. We are also adding new events at Caerlaverock Castle, Fort George and Blackness Castle to our jam-packed programme. If you are already a Historic Scotland member then you are in for a treat and if you are not then there’s never been a better year to join us.
We will also be sharing our best stories and historic facts with you from across the estate and each month we will focus on a different aspect of our history, heritage and archaeology. January’s theme is Poetry, Song & Music and you can read our blogs and watch our videos across all our websites and social media channels.
